The Pleistocene Epoch seen here 50 thousand years ago was a time when glaciers blanketed vast expanses of the northern and south hemispheres. Cold periods or ice ages alternated between warm periods during this time. Mammals adapted to the cold and other new environments and took on new forms such as the mammoths and mastodons of North America and Siberia; Diprotodon in Australia the largest marsupial ever to have lived; and giant ground sloths and armadillos called glyptodonts in South America.
